Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary is a compact park in Kenya’s southeast with excellent birding and beautiful scenery. Compared to the arid Tsavo nearby, Taita Hills is relatively lush and perfectly suited to game drives looking for lions, elephants and more across the grassy plains. Taita Hills has a fascinating history, having played a role in WWI. There is a museum that tells the story.
A visit to the Taita hills, in southern Kenya is a must-do for all serious birders. This is because three unique forest birds, Taita Apalis, Taita White-eye and Taita Thrush occur on this small forest patch and nowhere else in the world.
The mountains rise out of the hot semi-arid plains of Tsavo and prone to frequent fog and rain. Sometimes it can really be chilly cold up there, so ensure you have some warm cloths with you. The frequently visited forest patch is Ngangao.

Other than the Taitas special, you can easily pick species like; Orange Ground Thrush, Yellow-throated Woodland Warbler, Lemon Dove, Hartlaub’s Turaco, Evergreen forest Warbler, White-starred Robin, Striped-cheeked Greenbul and Striped Pipit.
Taita Hills occupies one of the greenest corners of southeastern Kenya. Acacias dot the rolling grasslands, and everything is particularly green along the main river valley. Away to the south and west, purple hills and mountains rise above the plains. Beyond the ridges lies Tanzania
The best months for wildlife viewing in Taita Hills are during the Dry season (June to October). Toward the end of that time, animals are more concentrated around water sources. Migrating birds begin arriving around November and stay until April. The peak rainy periods are November and March to April (the Wet season runs from November to May).
Taita Hills is close to Kenya’s southeastern border with Tanzania. The nearest main town is Voi (43km/27mi), and it makes a convenient stopover between Tsavo and northeastern Tanzania. Otherwise, it’s 201km/125mi by road from Mombasa and 371km/231mi from Nairobi. It can take 6 to 7 hours* to reach here from Nairobi, or 3 to 5 hours* from Mombasa.

Acacia woodlands
Lush swamps (fed by underground Kilimanjaro water)
Open savannah grasslands
Seasonal Lake Amboseli
You can visit Arabuko Sokoke year-round. The rain will test your stamina and perseverance on forest hikes in the wetter months, but you’ll have lots more birds, as well as frogs, for company. Alternatively, visit in the drier months, when the sunshine makes getting around much more pleasant.

We fell in love with Africa and in the hands of Fluttfails, well, we don’t need to tell you that we learned everything there is to know about everything that touched our experience. He is the legend! He is a wonder of a man and we all enjoyed one another’s company immensely. Thank you for pairing us with him.
We are Very grateful to have been able to experience this trip of a lifetime.Food was attractive in all places and well served. The children tried new dishes but really enjoyed pastas! Accommodations were quite satisfactory. We will return!
Thank you for providing the different concentrations of wildlife. The guides/drivers were all experts, but I thought Lenard was most personable… All were competent. Having a Masai connection added interest. Without exception the administrators and their staffs were excellent. I appreciated the participation many showed – engaging in soccer with the children, for example.
